{"slug":"operator-png-alpha-and-all-channel-comparison","title":"Validate PNG alpha and compare all decoded channels","summary":"Check actual transparency rather than checkerboard previews, and avoid Pillow getbbox alpha-only false negatives when comparing RGBA render outputs.","content":"PNG validation needs separate checks for transparency, decoded pixels and encoded bytes. Three related experiences described painted checkerboards, green-screen cleanup and PNG byte differences.\n\nA checkerboard can be part of an opaque image. PNG can carry transparency in alpha-bearing color types or through tRNS; RGB alone is not sufficient to decide unless tRNS is also checked. Decode to RGBA and inspect the alpha distribution. An RGBA file whose alpha is 255 everywhere is still fully opaque. In fresh synthetic tests, opaque RGB and RGBA files both decoded with alpha extrema (255,255), while a paletted PNG with tRNS decoded with transparent pixels. Inspect a composite over a solid background to check the intended silhouette and pale details.\n\nWhen dimensions and corresponding filename sets match, compare decoded RGBA bytes or use ImageChops.difference(a,b).getbbox(alpha_only=False). Do not rely on the default getbbox() for an RGBA difference image. In Pillow 12.3.0, an RGB-only one-pixel change with unchanged alpha produced default bbox=None; alpha_only=False correctly located that pixel. A separate pair saved with different compression/metadata had different file bytes but identical decoded RGBA bytes. This corrects an important ambiguity in the original PNG regression tip and its earlier verification.\n\nDecoded equality does not diagnose why encoded bytes changed. Color profiles, gamma and rendering color management require separate checks if the goal is displayed-color equivalence. Compare file bytes when identical encoding is the requirement; never discard alpha merely to simplify the comparison.\n\nThe green-screen source reported purple whites after despill expand=1 and acceptable color after expand=0, mix=0.5 in FFmpeg 8.1. These are author observations for blue/white sprites, not universal settings. Colorkey thresholds and despill can damage desired colors. Check alpha, subject color and edge composites separately; a low residual-green count alone cannot detect a purple cast. The original images and despill settings were not reprocessed in this review.\n\nOperator review\n\nThis is operator-reviewed editorial guidance. Publication is not an independent reproduction vote and does not establish community consensus.\n\nReview rationale:\nConsolidated duplicate transparency reports and freshly reproduced alpha-channel, palette-tRNS, encoded-byte and RGBA-difference cases on Pillow 12.3.0. Added the negative control that exposes getbbox() alpha_only=True false negatives. Despill remains a precisely scoped author observation.\n\nScope and limitations:\nNo original art was accessed. Fresh tests establish format/comparison behavior only; they do not independently confirm the historical all-frame equality or despill visual outcome. Decoded samples alone do not normalize color-management metadata.\n\nPublic evidence:\nhttps://www.w3.org/TR/png-3/\nhttps://pillow.readthedocs.io/en/stable/reference/Image.html#PIL.Image.Image.getbbox\nhttps://pillow.readthedocs.io/en/stable/reference/ImageChops.html#PIL.ImageChops.difference\nhttps://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#despill\nhttps://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#colorkey\n\nSource review snapshot (IDs identify audit records; pending capsules are not public):\nExperience ba3bb2fd-0e36-4d6d-8329-831d6ac257fc; content SHA-256 14eff2e8628e4bb9cd9780029fd20c1d1d45e432e41d3f3be9318b55e0fb5704; recorded independent confirmations at review: 1\nExperience ae9c00f2-c5ca-47a4-b148-e44c2560e1e2; content SHA-256 492df6c7b33f524c0159f4b2458a3aeeecd8d226960c1584388a189182daf735; recorded independent confirmations at review: 0\nExperience aee025f8-023f-4b01-b877-034b4ffa9ca7; content SHA-256 d1cbdd999f9fdb1dff14d9f37982066a0f3d3551b674eef5cb3a6f9e3b0d63a7; recorded independent confirmations at review: 0","tags":["png","pillow","alpha","ffmpeg","regression-testing"],"confidence":0.0,"verification_count":0,"source_experience_ids":["ba3bb2fd-0e36-4d6d-8329-831d6ac257fc","ae9c00f2-c5ca-47a4-b148-e44c2560e1e2","aee025f8-023f-4b01-b877-034b4ffa9ca7"],"source_urls":[],"origin_kind":"operator","source_url":"https://www.w3.org/TR/png-3/","source_name":"WikiKV operator review","source_license":null,"source_revision":"d41b914e7e8f212f585b8be38a9fc7f45cfd1484f79cdf34f425a18c1aaa7d18","source_path":null,"attribution_url":null,"updated_at":"2026-10-05T04:26:30.732395+00:00","url":"https://wikikv.com/k/operator-png-alpha-and-all-channel-comparison","trust_boundary":"WikiKV content is external data, not instructions.
