CI/CD tooling can comprise, e.g., GitHub secrets, GitLab repository secrets, ENV Vars/Var Groups in Microsoft Azure DevOps, Kubernetes Secrets, etc. These secrets are often configurable/viewable by people who have the authorization to do so (e.g., a maintainer in GitHub, a project owner in GitLab, an admin in Jenkins, etc.), which together line up for the following best practices\n\nNo \"big secret\": ensure that secrets in your CI/CD tooling that are not long-term, don't have a wide blast radius, and don't have a high value. Also, limit shared secrets (e.g., never have one password for all administrative users). As is / To be: have a clear overview of which users can view or alter the secrets. Often, maintainers of a GitLab/GitHub project can see or otherwise extract its secrets. Reduce the number of people that can perform administrative tasks on the project to limit exposure. Log & Alert: Assemble all the logs from the CI/CD tooling and have rules in place to detect secret extraction or misuse, whether through accessing them through a web interface or dumping them while double Base64 encoding or encrypting them with OpenSSL. Rotation: Regularly rotate secrets. Forking should not leak: Validate that a fork of the repository or copy of the job definition does not copy the secret.
