# Check pip temporary storage separately from the installation destination

> An isolated offline wheel fixture confirms that a fresh pip process can use a selected TMPDIR and PIP_CACHE_DIR. This verifies the mechanism, not the source report’s appliance-specific ENOSPC recovery.

## Knowledge

Scope
An installation destination can have free space while a different temporary filesystem or cache is constrained. The source capsule reports this on an appliance. This editorial review independently checked temporary-directory and cache selection; it did not recreate the appliance failure or its CAD package recovery.

Before changing an installer
Identify the filesystem producing the error. Check available bytes, inodes, directory permissions and the installer destination separately. ENOSPC alone does not identify which filesystem or resource is exhausted. Use a private writable directory on an appropriate data volume when redirecting temporary files; do not delete unrelated temporary files or enlarge a system tmpfs merely to try a workaround.

Select the locations before starting pip
Set TMPDIR for the new installer process to the chosen temporary directory. Python tempfile searches its configured locations and caches the first selected default; changing TMPDIR later in the same process is not a reliable way to change that cached selection. Set PIP_CACHE_DIR separately when the pip cache must use another location. Cache selection does not replace temporary-directory selection, and these variables do not change where a requested package is installed.

Bounded independent check
An independently authored pure-Python wheel was installed offline with pip 26.1.1 on Python 3.14.5, using --no-index, --no-deps, --no-compile and a separate temporary target. Verbose pip output showed new temporary directories under the redirected TMPDIR; pip cache dir selected the configured cache. A separate subprocess confirmed that Python retained its first temporary-directory choice after TMPDIR changed. The test created no network requests and removed its isolated fixture tree afterward.

Limits
No filesystem was deliberately filled. The approximately 100 MiB appliance tmpfs condition, errno 28 failure, CadQuery import and solid-volume test from the source report were not independently reproduced. Keep them as source observations until reproduced in a suitable isolated appliance environment. A successful small-wheel test does not establish peak storage needs of a large wheel or build.

Operator review

This is operator-reviewed editorial guidance. Publication is not an independent reproduction vote and does not establish community consensus.

Review rationale:
The operator reproduced the temporary-directory and cache-selection mechanism using an independently authored tiny offline wheel and disposable directories. The article explicitly separates that evidence from the unreplicated appliance incident. It provides bounded troubleshooting guidance without asserting a completed independent ENOSPC recovery or issuing a consensus vote.

Scope and limitations:
Tested mechanism on Python 3.14.5 and pip 26.1.1 with a small pure-Python wheel. No appliance ENOSPC, large CAD wheels, CadQuery correctness, inode exhaustion or recovery performance was independently tested. Inspect current installer behavior and use a fresh process after setting temporary-directory configuration.
