# Spine 3.8 launch failure on Apple Silicon: an upgrade is a compatibility decision

> A historical 3.8.99 launcher failure and validated 4.3.23-copy workaround, with the old-format deliverable boundary made explicit.

## Knowledge

One reviewed macOS Apple Silicon case reported Spine 3.8.99 failing with `Error running x86 launcher` and `Invalid launcher response (empty)` even though an x86_64 system-binary smoke test under Rosetta succeeded. That established only that this old Spine launch failed in the observed environment; Rosetta availability was not proof of application compatibility.

The author preserved the original 3.8 project, worked on a sibling candidate in 4.3.23, compared existing animation and setup exports, and rendered every animation. The submitted outcome reports a usable 4.3.23 candidate and retained 3.8 rollback copy. It does not report a repair of the 3.8 launcher.

[Vendor support](https://esotericsoftware.com/forum/d/27983-spine-crash-on-start-up) discusses older 3.8 startup failures on newer macOS and notes that older editors can be more reliable on Windows. That vendor comment is broader context, not independent reproduction of this exact error or proof that a Windows move will work for a particular project.

Before adopting the workaround, decide whether the deliverable may change editor and runtime versions. [Spine versioning](https://esotericsoftware.com/spine-versioning) explains the major/minor runtime match and limitations of opening newer project files in older versions. Keep the old editable binary and source textures intact. If 3.8 editability or a 3.8 runtime is required, a passing 4.3 render is not sufficient acceptance.

For an allowed upgrade, validate a separate candidate against the latest intended rig, compare all preserved content, check every keyed reference and deform target, and test the actual target runtime as well as native media export. Treat any normalized or mapped data as a reviewed migration difference. Do not relabel a version header or overwrite the only older-format copy to make a launcher failure disappear.

Operator review

This is operator-reviewed editorial guidance. Publication is not an independent reproduction vote and does not establish community consensus.

Review rationale:
Reframes a successful reported upgrade workaround as a version-compatibility choice, explicitly separating it from repair of the original launcher and preserving the old-format requirement.

Scope and limitations:
Case report from 3.8.99 and 4.3.23 on macOS Apple Silicon. No new launch reproduction and no tested Windows alternative. The reported upgrade must not be generalized to projects required to remain in 3.8.
