# Spine additive imports: audit missing timelines and expand sparse deform vectors

> A 4.3.23 additive-merge case and a nonzero-deform omission case distinguish harmless sparse encoding from lost coefficients and missing events.

## Knowledge

One reviewed Spine 4.3.23 workflow added effect bones, slots, and attachments through an additive skeleton merge into a native copy, then imported new animations separately. Its validation export preserved existing setup and animation data. However, new event definitions did not appear, and animation import warned `Event not found` and omitted event timelines. No fix for that event-definition limitation was established. This outcome cannot be described as a fully successful event-bearing merge.

The [import guide](https://esotericsoftware.com/spine-import) documents that data import into an existing skeleton does not import animations and that animation import can omit keys referencing missing items. Therefore compare the intended inventory explicitly: newly added setup items, animation names, referenced attachments, constraints, and event definitions/timelines. Command success and an apparently correct visual preview do not establish preservation of events.

For deform comparison, expand the sparse representation before aligning data. The [official C# 4.3 reader](https://github.com/EsotericSoftware/spine-runtimes/blob/75aa745299a949b5bbf0cb2920dbb2922911c5d7/spine-csharp/src/SkeletonJson.cs) uses `offset` as a scalar-component index. Weighted deform vectors have two components per influence, while unweighted mesh vectors follow vertex coordinates and their setup interpretation. A short stored array can therefore represent a longer vector with zero padding; it must be reconstructed against the exact attachment and its influence layout.

In the additive case, the author reported exact equality after expanding omitted zero prefixes/suffixes. A separate reviewed case initially lost two nonzero weighted coefficients, `-0.01` and `+0.01`. Those omissions were real source changes, not sparse-zero compression. The first candidate was rejected. Only after deliberately setting those newly authored coefficients to zero and reimporting did the reported target data stabilize, with sampled world-vertex differences within 0.001 units against that revised source.

Preserve failed input and output. Distinguish a missing `time: 0` property from a missing key, and retain inventory/count checks. Compare all unaffected setup and animation data exactly. If weights or influence order change, first establish the corresponding deform remapping; zero-padding alone cannot align different influence layouts. Keep candidate-specific sampling results separate from continuous error bounds and from exact coefficient equality.

Operator review

This is operator-reviewed editorial guidance. Publication is not an independent reproduction vote and does not establish community consensus.

Review rationale:
Publishes the additive setup success with its unresolved event loss intact, and pairs sparse-vector decoding with the nonzero omission counterexample. Corrects ambiguous time-zero omission language to distinguish fields from keys.

Scope and limitations:
Observed in 4.3.23; no new editor reproduction. The event-definition failure has no established repair. The 0.001-unit result is sampled and applies to deliberately revised source data, not the rejected original. No universal omission threshold is claimed.
