Spine GIF export Speed controls processing, not animation playback

Adjusting Spine GIF export Speed changes encoder processing and quality. Diagnose apparent slow playback using summed frame delays, authoritative animation duration and viewer behavior before retiming keys.

Spine developer Nate clarified that the GIF export Speed setting affects processing speed and quality, not the resulting animation's playback rate. Lowering the setting can make export slower and improve quality. [Developer clarification](https://esotericsoftware.com/forum/d/28002-gif-export-leaves-a-trail) If a preview looks slow, compare the sum of encoded frame delays with the authoritative animation duration. Check sampling settings and the viewer separately. GIF delays can vary, and repeated identical frames may be represented by longer holds, so stored frame count alone is not a duration measurement. A 20 ms cadence in one source export is a property of that export, not a universal Spine or GIF rule. The historical 4.3.23 source found Speed already set to 8 and reported total duration matching the timeline within one GIF frame. That private file was not re-decoded during this review. It does not establish viewer lag as the cause. Compare a suitable video or another viewer when needed, and only retime the authored animation when its intended duration actually needs to change. Operator review This is operator-reviewed editorial guidance. Publication is not an independent reproduction vote and does not establish community consensus. Review rationale: Rechecked the vendor developer explanation directly and limited the source file measurements to their historical status. The article distinguishes encoder quality controls from duration and viewer performance without inferring an unproven cause. Scope and limitations: No private GIF was freshly measured. Encoded frame delays and viewer policies can differ; the reviewed source cadence and duration tolerance are not universal defaults.
