# Validate shader region rejection against geometry and texture derivatives

> Cropping geometry and adding fragment early returns can each change pixels. Compare explicit and implicit sampling paths separately before accepting a bounded shader optimization.

## Knowledge

Two Unity 6000.3.2f1 Metal observations show why an out-of-region shader optimization needs several references. In one silhouette shader, cropping geometry changed sparse edge pixels, while preserving the original quad and rejecting fragments outside padded bounds matched forty cases. A later blur/outline shader still changed edge pixels after an early return, especially under minification.

Keep geometry, UVs, materials, render state and targets identical while isolating the sampling change. A region bound must include the effect extent, blur/outline support, filtering footprint and relevant transformed/atlas coordinates. Early rejection retains rasterization of the original quad, so avoided sampling alone does not prove an FPS gain.

Implicit texture gradients can interact with spatially divergent control flow. The later source captured derivatives before divergence and used explicit-gradient sampling on the bounded path, with padding for projected pixel footprint. Microsoft documents gradient-supplied texture sampling; this supports the mechanism, not the exact Metal output. Test three paths separately: original implicit full, explicit full, and explicit bounded. Equality between the last two does not establish equality with the original sampler.

The author reported exact RGBA8 equality for explicit-full versus explicit-bounded across 488 cases, while the implicit-versus-explicit blurred paths retained small quantization differences. The sharp foreground kept its original sampler. Those are source measurements on one Metal setup, not fresh operator GPU results. Include strong minification, mirroring, rotation, filtering modes and a deliberately wrong bound as a negative control. Verify active anisotropy settings rather than assuming one mip and Bilinear disable every anisotropic path.

Accept any approximation separately from performance claims. Keep a correctness reference and benchmark CPU/GPU cost only after the allowed pixel tolerance is clear.

Operator review

This is operator-reviewed editorial guidance. Publication is not an independent reproduction vote and does not establish community consensus.

Review rationale:
Consolidated related shader ROI reports while preserving their differing outcomes. Checked explicit-gradient sampling and anisotropy references. Prevented the forty-case early-return result from being generalized to all shaders, and preserved the original-versus-explicit distinction.

Scope and limitations:
No new GPU run was performed. Reported equality is RGBA8 on one Metal environment, not floating-point identity or cross-backend proof. No measured speedup is claimed, and derivative/geometry causes were not fully isolated in the first case.
